Uncertain economic times are raising stress levels across America, which is no surprise. Stress can cause people to neglect basic medical and dental care and cause a host of health problems.
Health problems that can be caused by stress, according to the American Psychological Association, include higher blood pressure, weakened immune system and periodontal health. All of these conditions can lead to potentially serious medical issues.
It is easy to put dental health on the back burner when worried about money and a job. Dental visits are expensive and take funds away from other needs, such as food and shelter. As people lose their jobs and lose dental benefits that come with company medical insurance plans, they may make the decision that teeth just have to wait.
Periodontal disease can be the cost of neglect and can lead to more serious and expensive health problems.
Stress Makes People Susceptible to Bad Habits
The President of the American Academy of Periodontology, David Cochran, DDS, PhD, made a statement in a press release that stress can make a person more susceptible to habits that have a negative impact on oral health. People under stress may drink more alcohol, smoke cigarettes and neglect oral hygiene. Smoking, drinking and neglect are linked to risk factors for periodontal disease, heart disease and diabetes.
Study Shows Stressed People Neglect Teeth
In a study that was published in the February 2009 issue of Journal of Periodontology (JOP) it was confirmed that stress can interfere with oral hygiene that protects teeth. Participants (56%) self reported that they neglected healthy oral hygiene routines such as brushing and flossing.
In addition to the neglect of hygiene due to stress, the stress hormone, cortisol, can lead to destructive periodontal disease.
Dr. Cochran stated that even during times of high stress, people should not neglect healthy habits such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep. Good health habits help to maintain a healthy mouth and smile.
Remember to Protect Smile
Taking care of the mouth and teeth can save money in the long run, by preventing potentially expensive periodontal disease and other health costs.
Individuals can prevent periodontal disease with good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing. Regular dental visits ensure that hygienists and dentists can look for signs of developing periodontal disease before it becomes a major problem.
Dentists screen for potential periodontal disease by inspecting the gums and measuring the pockets that can form under the gum line, where bacteria can gather and cause harmful plaque.
People living in stressful circumstances may feel more in control if they take steps to improve their dental health and their physical health.
