J.K. Rowling
Joanne Kathleen Rowling was born in England in 1965 and educated at Wnyedean Comnprehensive and Exeter University. As a postgraduate, Rowling went to work for Amnesty International in London.
The Harry Potter series was born while Rowling was on a train trip from Manchester to KIng's Cross in London. The train was delayed and she filled her time by starting to write the Harry Potter story. During the next five years, Rowlling outlined the plots for each book and started the first book.
Rowilng moved to Portugal. where she taught Engliish as a foreign language. She married and had a daughter, but the marriage did not last. She moved back to the U.K. and lived in Edinburgh. She was a single mother with a daughter to support and had to live on the dole, or welfare. It was during this period that the book Harry & The Philosopher's Stone was completed.
Rowling sent out manuscripts and endured multiple rejections because publishers considered childrens' a books unprofitable. Eventually, Rowling was accepted by an agent and a publisher. She was told that she would never make money as an author of children's books. She responded that she wrote for the love of writing, not for the money.
