Grammy winning singer Whitney Houston passed away on the eve of Music's Biggest Night and the giants of the music industry paid tribute to the star.

Singer Whitney Houston rose to the heights as a pop singer, but her personal and professional life was marred by drug addiction. Houston died at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California, on February 12, 2012. Houston's cause of death has not been disclosed as of this writing.

Grammy Winner Whitney Houston Tribute at Grammys

Whitney Houston, 48, was at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, participating in events leading up to the 54th Grammy Awards, being held on February 12, 2012. Houston was scheduled to attend a party being held by mentor Clive Davis on Saturday night. Houston, a six time Grammy Award winner, was not intending to attend the Grammy Awards themselves.

Houston was reportedly found unresponsive in her hotel room on Saturday afternoon. Attempts to revive the signer were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead in her room.

Grammy organizers rushed to add a tribute to Whitney Houston. Grammy winning singer Jennifer Hudson was tapped to do the honors and sing the tribute to Houston.

Grammy host LL Cool J, opened the Grammy Awards by saying that the only appropriate way to open the show was to pray. LL Cool J then offered a prayer, thanking God for the gift of Whitney Houston. It was a touching and unique moment, to see the giants of the music industry bowing their heads in prayer on the live television broadcast, on CBS Television Network.

Whitney Houston came from a musical family. Her mother Cissy Houston is a gospel singer. Her cousin is music legend Dionne Warwick.

Houston was married to R&B singer Bobby Brown for 15 years, but they divorced, The marriage was tumultuous, but Brown, who was at a performance, expressed his grief over the news that his ex-wife had died and asked for prayers for himself and their daughter. Houston's godmother, legendary singer Aretha Franklin, gave a telephone interview to CNN and said that she had been shocked when news of Houston's death crossed the television screen.

Whitney Houston's Career

Whitney Houston's musical career spanned over three decades. She broke onto the scene as a fresh faced young woman with a soaring voice and a background in Gospel Music.

Houston won her first Grammy in 1985 for I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me). In 1993 Houston won three Grammy Awards: Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female and Record Of The Year for I Will Always Love You; and Album Of The Year for The Bodyguard — Original Soundtrack. Houston's most recent Grammy win came in 1999 for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for It's Not Right But It's Okay.
